The Plymouth Arts Center opened a new art exhibit in Gallery 110 North on Friday, May 7th. “Alive in the Arts” is the organization’s 26th annual juried exhibition showcasing Wisconsin Fine Artists. Artist Bonnita Budysz was the juror for this competition. She reviewed artwork from artists living and working throughout the state of Wisconsin and has chosen 80 pieces for this show representing 57 artists. The public was invited to attend the opening reception Friday, May 7th from 5-7 pm. Live musical entertainment was provided courtesy of Katie Christensen, piano; Emmie Christensen, violin, from 5:00-5:45 pm and Dan Ognavic, piano, from 5:45-6:30pm. Complimentary refreshments were served. “Alive in the Arts” will be on display through August 6, 2021. The show is generously underwritten by Conrad and Barbara Barrows, Wisconsin Bank and Trust, 20/20 Visions/ Dr. Sharon Roberts and Dr. Brad Wicklund, and the Wisconsin Arts Board.

Awards for this show were determined at the Juror/Judge’s discretion from the actual work. The winning artists were recognized during the opening reception Awards Ceremony. Cash awards totaling $1000 and Merit Awards were presented.

About the Juror BONNITA BUDYSZ. Bonnita’s highly acclaimed, internationally awarded paintings are widely exhibited and sought after by private and corporate collectors, fine galleries, and museums alike and consistently garner prestigious awards at the American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America, and the Pastel Society of the West Coast. International Artist Magazine, American Artist, Art of the West, Plein Air Magazine, and Wisconsin Trails chose to showcase her work and inspired way of going. As founder of the ecologically sensitive Plein Air painting group Water’s Edge Artists, and with the launch of the Water Dance Project, she continues to champion conservation issues. She shares her love of art by conducting popular workshops; by exhibiting locally, nationally and internationally; and by demonstrating and lecturing at prestigious learning institutions worldwide. www.BonnitaBudysz.com

Gallery 110 North is located in the Plymouth Arts Center, 520 E. Mill Street in historic downtown Plymouth. Regular PAC hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10am to 4pm. Best of Show -“Kaleidoscope Afternoon” Oil on Canvas by Tom Smith “I was compelled to come back, over and over again, and linger each and every time with the fragmented and jewel-like color, with bold, bravura brushwork throughout. One feels the wonder of each of earth’s eco-elements here – the Water welcoming one in, the Earth forms of rocks, trees, sloping ground, the sun as Fire in the sunny sky, and Wind rustling the leaves and guiding my Walk in these Wonderful Woods. Bravo and Congratulations!!!
First Place - “In The Middle” Clay & Forged Iron by Sylvia & Mark Mondloch “There is a primeval, primitive, definitely prehistoric quality to this exciting turtle shell shaped shield piece. Everything design-wise truly does emanate from ‘the Middle’. I particularly like how the weighty, textured and twisted snaking of forged metal exquisitely cradles the smooth clay.”
Second Place – “Kobi Dansu” (Mating Dance) Mixed Media Monoprint by Jack Pachuta “The rituals of courtship along with the sublime and serene setting, are designed with an elegance and sensitivity that cajoles us to come & witness the divine dance. Up close, the gradated subdued, serene colors soothe us, and then …here comes the powerful punch of red orb and red feathers! Yes!
Third Place – “Majestic Memories” Fiber Plus Multi-Media by Sandra Achterberg “What’s behind the door – what’s inside the box? But oh, the black and gold juxtaposition, the architectural projections top and bottom, the beguiling design and enchanting feel of the centered door! Every element of consideration here works magnificently!
Merit Award “Spring Sun at Zion” Photograph by William Brusky “With a substantial presence and inviting composition, the stage was set for the powerful punch of raw red color, that delightfully frames the delicacy of lacy, silvery tree branches. Saturated color and contrasting textures kept me coming back for more.”
Merit Award “Bayswater Stop” Photograph by Lew Cadkin “An absolutely compellingly designed piece, with abstract qualities and sweeping diagonals. Merit Award “Forms & Feathers” Mixed Media Drawing by Tim Fonk “The drama of a soaring, extreme vertical format emphasized the magic, fanciful flight of crows, which was captured beautifully with unmatched vitality. The artist’s mastery of design and willingness to risk it all is apparent here – much to our absolute delight!” Kudos on the 3-D companion crow as well!
Merit Award “Dreamtime Blaze” (Australian Wildfires) Mixed Media Collage by Kay Jelinek “This is what I like to call a ‘Journey’ painting, with abstract forms that suggest the topography of growth and organic elemental components. The alchemy of earth’s embers smoldering, further enhanced by shifting jewel-like color patterns, invites an ethereal and enthralling walkabout!”
Merit Award “Springtime” Watercolor by Keary Kautzer “The brash and confident boldness of the dark and silhouetted barn and building shapes against the blue sky is so powerful in this piece. There is just enough suggestion of fence posts and their patterned reflection in the foreground pool, to support the purity of form here. Less is definitely Much More in this case!”
Merit Award “Bless the Bee” Encaustic, Mixed Media Collage by Terri Lockwood “One can sink into the deep surface here and swim in reverie, as one must when angels and buzzing bees take flight. The artist has the rare ability to use gentle imagery, manipulate a multitude of materials, including found objects d’art of collage, and still convey a powerful environmental message of the utmost urgency.
Merit Award “Wolf Moon Sleigh Ride” Oil by Mary Ulm Mayhew “The atmospheric mood and creative cropping of the horses’ bodies, puts the viewer in the sleigh, to manipulate the reins - to go home? You are invited to make it Your Story with the beautiful, subdued colors and soft edges creating a dreamlike surround. The feel of gently swirling snow is achieved by masterful brushwork.”
Merit Award “Off Kilter” Mixed Media Oil & Cold Wax on Panel by Denise Presnell “The presence of this dark, richly saturated and textured abstract piece with its colorful and compelling mark-making pulls one to explore the multi-layered surface. The reward is new discoveries at each go-around, with the feeling of elemental design forces creating a vortex for further exploration.
Merit Award “Egg Boat” Mixed Media, Stoneware, Wire, Clay Egg by Patrick Robison “So many evocative references to comfort happen for me with this piece. Could it be the lattice strips of my favorite pie oh-my crust, or the weaving of a cradled basket, holding the seed of life, the source, the egg? The emotional connection is further enhanced by soft ombre color and rounded forms.
Merit Award Bouquet For You” Oil by Wanda Yuhas Weller “A purely poetic painting with a spill and spray of multi-colored daisies going this way n’ that. An immediacy is achieved by creative cropping of the vase and the soft, fluid edges, which directs our attention to the glorious color of the flowers. There is a lyrical fluidity and playfulness to this piece.”
