The public is invited to the Plymouth Arts Center on Friday, September 28, 2018, from 6 to 9pm to view and bid on original paintings of Plymouth, Sheboygan Falls, and our beautiful rural areas! Come and meet the artists, see the complete collection of paintings that will be created during Paint the Towns, En Plein Air 2018, and bid on your favorite piece at the silent auction. There will be live music, complimentary appetizers, and a cash bar. Admission for the “Paint the Towns” gala is free and open to the public. Bring your friends and neighbors; don’t miss your opportunity to own an original painting of our beautiful area for your home or office, or as a one of a kind gift! The paintings on display and up for bid at the Plymouth Arts Center will be created outdoors “plein air” during the Arts Center’s annual “Paint the Towns, En Plein Air” event. Artist Dan Rizzi of Plymouth is graciously coordinating the event as a fundraiser for the Plymouth Arts Center. Artists from all over the state of Wisconsin and beyond are participating in this ninth annual paint-out and will be competing for cash and merit awards. Place your vote on Friday night for the painting that best depicts Plymouth and Sheboygan Falls in the Viewer’s Choice category. Unsold paintings at the Silent Auction will be on display and for sale through October 13th only at “Buy It Now” fixed price.

A delicious buffet of appetizers and desserts were served at the annual Paint the Towns reception.
Best of Historic Plymouth- Judges notes: “Happiness is not a Piece of Cake” by Mickey Cunningham is a celebration of Plymouth farming history. The peeling paint of an old ice cream advertisement celebrates the dairy industry while goats graze in the foreground. The old barn is set up on the green hill like a monument to local culture.
Artist Choice Award- “Conjunction in Greys and Whites” by Troy Tatlock.
Merit Award- Judges notes: “Car Barn” by Judith Gahn Murphy is fresh. Fresh in the artist’s use of color and application of paint. It is a big painting on a little canvas.
Musician Thomas Pibal provided beautiful music for this year’s Paint the Towns event.
Best of Historic Sheboygan Falls- Judges notes: “Lovely Entrance” by Peggy Hope is a lovely little detail that offers a sense of history and nostalgia for Sheboygan Falls. The painting pulls a viewer in and offers a sense of comfort in the old Victorian style house. It is evening time, the shadows cast and color choices emphasize the time of day where the foliage is reminiscent of fall. I imagine smells of dinner time.

3rd Place- Judges Notes: “A Lineman for the County” by Marc Anderson is worth walking up to. The puddle in the upper foreground is just one example of the artist’s exemplary application of paint. The dulled down color palette and simple use of line as well as perspective lend to the success of the tight composition.
Best of Show- Judges notes: “Homecoming Draped in White” by Troy Tatlock immediately caught my eye. It is a well-executed painting of a subject matter that would normally be considered an eye sore. I kept coming back to the painting and felt a tinge of nostalgia. It seemed possible to step inside the painting and be transferred to a brisk, sunshiny fall day of my senior year of high school. There is a wonderful sense of movement and the slightly off kilter composition is like a nonchalant side glance at the everyday.
Honorable Mention & Peoples Choice Award- “Mullet River Evening” by Jack Schnable is a quaint little painting. I almost overlooked it but then kept coming back to it. The painting offers the viewer a quiet place to think. The light is slightly muted but warm with lovely variation in tone and paint application.

2nd Place- ”Relinquishing” by DK Palecek is just juicy with colors. The subtle contrasts and use of complementary colors is reminiscent of an Edward Hopper painting. There is a stillness in the painting that comes to life through the play on light and vivid color palette. It is atmospheric and an awesome capture of “magic hour”. Really stunning.
A photo of some of the Award-Winning Artists. Erin LaBonte was the judge for the 2018 Paint the Towns En Plein Air event. Erin received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of WI-Stevens Point and her Masters of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. She has participated in artistic residencies in Costa Rica and Argentina and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Erin practices many artistic mediums in her own studio. She is an advocate for bringing art to public spaces and for community engagement. She is dedicated to inspiring and educating young artists in their personal explorations. She is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Silver Lake College of the Holy Family in Manitowoc, WI.
Honarable Mention- Judges Notes: “On the Tracks” by Adele Reichert is an interesting intersection of new and old, urban and rural. The telephone wires and the train pull your eye into to the focal point of the house, which seems to be run down. The piece seems to be about changing times in our small towns. It is recognizable, everyday, not elevated, but worth documenting. Nicely done.
Sunshine Award- Judges Notes: “Morning on Cty Rd. M” by Susan Klem. This painting is sunshine. The landscape is inviting and warm, the kind of place you want to stretch your arms and take a deep breath!

Plymouth native, Annika Nelson, a student at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, will present a special senior recital as she prepares for graduation. This performance offers the greater Plymouth community an opportunity to experience the culmination of her undergraduate studies in classical guitar prior to her official graduation recital.
