“Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up” is pure 1950’s Catholic school, both funny and wistful, capturing the most humorous aspects of youthful growing pains and the trying moments of adolescence. A staple with community theatres across America, this coming-of-age musical was written by John Powers with lyrics and music by James Quinn and Alaric Jans. Michael Eberhardy is the director.
The boy-next-door character, Eddie Ryan, narrates the memory musical as he returns to St. Bastion’s to find his first love, Becky Bakowski. It’s a classic “boy gets girl, boy looses girl, boy gets girl” plot with a charming twist. Follow Becky and Eddie from elementary through high school in a more innocent era, and remember a little of your own childhood along the way. In Act II, you’ll find the group in separate High schools, one for the boys and one for the girls. The “Doo-Waa, Doo-Wee” tune demonstrates what a 50’s mixer was really about. Sit back, relax, and take a trip down memory lane.
