PLYMOUTH, WI- “Alive in the Arts,” Plymouth Arts Center’s 31st annual juried exhibition will open in Gallery 110 North, Friday, May 15, 2026. Shannon Kupfer was the juror for this annual competition. Shannon reviewed artwork from artists living and working throughout the state of Wisconsin. The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception Friday, May 15 from 5-7:30 pm. Enjoy live musical entertainment presented courtesy of Drea Wagner Ream, piano. Complimentary appetizers & desserts will be served with a cash bar. “Alive in the Arts” will be on display through August 7, 2026. The presenting sponsors are Robert & Phyllis Hoopman and UMB Bank, Plymouth.

Awards for this show are determined at the Juror/Judge’s discretion from the actual work. The winning artists will be announced during the Awards Ceremony at 6:00 pm at the reception. Cash awards totaling $2000 and Merit Awards will be presented.

About the Juror Shannon Kupfer: Shannon serves as Curator and Education Coordinator at the Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts in Fond du Lac, WI, where she champions community engagement through innovative arts programming, collaboration, and education. She also currently serves as Executive Director of Wisconsin Visual Artists (WVA). A practicing interdisciplinary artist, Shannon integrates art and science in her creative work. She holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art and Media from the Ontario College of Art and Design.

Gallery 110 North is located in the Plymouth Arts Center, 520 E. Mill Street in historic downtown Plymouth. Admission to Gallery 110 North is always free thanks in part to our generous sponsors. Juror’s Comments: This painting struck me with a high level of prowess with oil paint. There is a beautiful handle on technique with regards to careful detail, realism, saturated tones, and soft blending. The subject is captured in action and leads me into the rest of the painting which holds my attention with a moody waterscape. The dark, heaviness of the clouds imposing on the bright sky below sets a dramatic tone for the scene. One of my favorite details is the approach to choppy water that has a captivating juxtaposition between warm and cool tones in the waves.
Juror’s Comments: “Love Story” has such a presence in-person when I stand in front of it. I enjoy the looser brushwork of the background that brings movement and life to the greenery while also highlighting the material nature of the medium when applied in this unique way on canvas. The artist imbued the white birds with so much vibrant color that I find myself continually returning to the feathers with my eyes.
Juror’s Comments: I find a lot of things to love about abstract works, but especially when they evoke feelings, memories, and encourage me to find the allusions to imagery amongst the colors and brushstrokes. “Warm Sky” ignited this curiosity in me and stimulated my imagination as imagined different types of landscapes and stories in the horizon. I like that it’s not entirely straightforward and I am left with questions that keep me looking.
Juror’s Comments: I am drawn to the intermingling of media in this sculptural piece. There is an interesting play back and forth between softness and hardness with regards to the media itself, how it has been manipulated, and the nasturtiums as subject matter. I find my eyes bouncing around exploring the different textures in the glossy glaze, the matte ceramic prints, the carved details, and the hard, yet delicately sculpted iron. I also enjoy the balanced composition that bends the definition of 2D and 3D sculpture as it “grows” toward the viewer and off the wall.
Juror’s Comments: The textured and linear brushwork of this piece drew me in and held me in its seemingly unending detail. I don’t get lost there but rather snake my way through to the background to ground myself in this beautiful landscape. The composition doesn’t catch you with an exaggerated focal point, but rather finds it’s balance through movement, color, and contrast as you explore the scene from the foreground back.
Juror’s Comments: I enjoy the simple, serene subject matter of this artwork. It allows the layered, silk fabric to take center stage and changes how you view the scene. I like that it almost becomes interactive as you approach from different angles or shift your view from side to side. This effect gives a depth to the work that invites the viewer inward for a walk through the eerie forest.
Juror’s Comments: I like when an artwork can capture you in multiple ways depending on where you stand or how you look at it. “Raw Goods” achieves this with chaotically captivating detail when you lean in close and an emergence of shifts in tone and contrast when you stand afar. This contemporary quilt has a strong personality and unique approach to fiber arts that drew me right in to its individual stitches.
Juror’s Comments: I couldn’t help but smile when I approached this play on a classic fairy tale. The tower conveys a swaying, soft crookedness that can only make sense in a playful fantasy world. It sparks curiosity and a bit of nostalgia. The knotted, ratty fabric emerging from the window adds an unsettling feeling for me, reminding me of the underpinnings of imprisonment and escape.
Juror’s Comments: I was immediately drawn into this painting by the color choices and the subtle shifts between them. It’s like an urban alleyway is imbued with the delicate tones of a sunset. I also admire the careful application of watercolor and beautiful realism that was achieved without overworking the paper.
